The Alienist - Angel of Darkness

Concept design of environments and key sets
Set dressing and prop design
Vfx and background design

Our key task was to help the production team with providing detailed concept designs for the key sets.

We created detailed environment and set designs working closely with the production designer, Ruth Ammon, what included directions for set dressing, background design for certain areas and also for vfx.
In the following section, you can see some process videos of our concepts and scenes from the series that take place in these sets.
This video shows the structure of the final concept design for this set we made for the Alienist and a snippet of the scene it features in.⠀
Having a well-organized image structure is essential for being able to make changes easily and also because we work in a team and it can always happen that a concept gets passed over to someone else. In these cases it saves a lot of frustration if one can easily navigate through the image that is handed over.
One of the darkest locations in the series is Gansevoort Market, for which our studio has created several concepts. With this setting, we wanted to show the bustling turmoil of the market and the diversity of people and vendors. In the process, first the 3D base was colored and covered with the texture of the characteristic materials and then it got populated with the people of the street. When working on these images that depict a location, after the functional parts are in place, the most important elements are the mini stories that show typical and interesting daily moments of that environment. In this image for example the rat trap and the guys drowning rats by the cart for example.⠀
And after everything is blocked in, the next challenge is to make sure that the colors and the lighting of all these elements make sense together, creating a cohesive image that captures the atmosphere of the location.⠀
In the production of a series there are several built sets that actually change purpose as the series continues. After shooting certain scenes, these sets are reconstructed and dressed differently so they can serve as a new location in the show.⠀
This picture was made as a part of such a redesign process. We had the task of reworking an existing street section to the crossroads of 5th Avenue at the Upper East Side.⠀

The building in the middle and the other one on the right were part of an existing set, but larger-scale changes had to be made. The building on the right got a new entrance, a balcony and some additional windows and it was repainted. The building's fences were also changed. And the house in the middle got a new roof as well.⠀
This new location also features the characteristic fence of Central Park which appears on the left side of the picture, and further down the road we had to make sure to include typical buildings of the avenue.
